Camera Allegedly Shows Michael Hessemer Committing Murder
Update: Michael Hessemer goes on trial November 6, 2008.
Michael David Hessemer deserves life in prison if news reports are correct. Here is what is said to have happened:
A police search warrant affidavit states that Michael Hessemer called 911 at about 5:30 am on February 3, 2008 and told emergency personnel that a man had drowned in the Mountain Park apartment building’s clubhouse in Lake Oswego. Upon arriving, fire and medical workers discovered Fred Stephens without a pulse and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Anthony Sparling, a Lake Oswego police officer, managed to obtain a surveillance video from the clubhouse that shows Michael Hessemer striking Fred Stephens around 5 am and Stephens becoming submerged several times before they finished. Hessemer than proceeded to sit and watch as Fred struggled to stay up above the water and while air bubbles came from Fred. Michael Hessemer waited a while more and then left the hot tub and came back later to try and pull the lifeless body from the tub. Hessemer states that he had consumed 10 beers that night. Police searched his apartment in Lake Oswego and found empty bottles of beer and vodka and a marijuana pipe.
Before police had seen the video, Michael Hessemer told them that he and Fred had been drinking together that evening and sometime late they had gone to the clubhouse hot tub. He claimed that their friends had left and that he and Fred had remained in the hot tub and he fell asleep for a minute and woke up to see Fred at the bottom of the tub. Michael Hessemer also claimed that he had attempted to save Fred’s life and perform rescue breathing. Unbelievable.
The whole event is utterly horrifying. One of the articles I read also said that Hessemer “was distraught, crying that, ‘he could not believe this was happening and he did not know what he was going to say to Mr. Stephens’ parents.’”

The article says they found cocaine in Hessemer’s apt as well. What a tragedy. What a scumbag. Hessemer needs to pay.
I would like to request that, given the time, you will keep us updated on Hessemer’s trial. This is on par with premeditation.
I have spoken with some of Hessemer’s old social circle and it sounds like the Young Life kid that his dad tried to make him out to be was FAR from reality. Sounds like Hessemer was quite the drug supplier for awhile there…let’s pray this kid gets life without parole
Tim, Michael Hessemer’s trial is set to begin today (April 1), so there is no word yet on what is happening.
What is happening with the trial date? Nothing here on the television stations or in the Portland newspapers. If anyone has any information on the trial date, please advise. Thanks.
All I know at this point is that Michael Hessemer was scheduled to stand trial in Frederick Stephen’s murder on April 1st.

I am a college acquaintance of Fred’s and an attorney in Clackamas County, Oregon.
I have access to the online court register and the trial has been set back to November. More witnesses have surfaced. It looks like the defense is trying to delay to work out a plea deal, from what I have observed online and from my experience.
God Bless Fred and his family. I hope the scholarship fund takes off…what a great remembrance.

I believe that the trial does not begin till November. As far as I know, there is no recent news.
The latest I know from the court (and this is just from my own independent research – I have nothing to do with the case) is that there are some preliminary hearings set this fall to try to suppress certain evidence and something about an important witness. No further information can be found out without going to the courthouse and digging through the file. The trial is still set for November and the accused has remained in jail (assumedly he couldn’t afford to make bail, which was set very high). I believe the case has been assigned to the Honorable Judge Robert Herndon, who is a very capable jurist and well respected within the community. It will be very interesting to see what happens.

The trial is set for 11/6 at the Clackamas Co. Courthouse in Oregon City
