Why aren’t you doing it?

People make many excuses to themselves why they aren’t living their dreams:
“I need to pay off my mortgage.”
“I’ll wait till my kids are out of school.”
“I’m not good enough.”

I think that if most people wrote down what they actually would love to do most from day to day they would realize they are much closer than they realize.

Don’t let fear and laziness hold you back from living life.

I think we all do.

My strongest regrets are not for things I did, but for things I didn’t do:

• Being afraid of girls and not talking to them till I was older
• Not starting to exercise till I was 16
• Not having a better high school GPA
• Not turning off my television sooner

I don’t regret actions that I took that failed, because I know I tried hard and took the shot even though it didn’t succeed.  To be honest though, when I have tried to do something I was afraid of I often surprised myself by finding out how easy it was and wondering why I didn’t do it sooner.

My greatest fear is no longer of failing, but of not trying.

Seek out fresh opportunities all the time and your life will be much happier.  Accepting the status quo is a decision to avoid potentially interesting new adventures.

• The power of persistence = trite, over-indulgent, wisdom that’s mostly ignored.

But, it’s one of the most powerful mechanisms to make your business succeed.

Persistence Mathematically Works

Peep this:

1. Google, P&G, 3M, and every other ridiculous innovator knows that every product they release won’t be profitable.
2. They know that every product comes with a high probability of failure.

So assume this:

1. Your first try has a 10% chance of succeeding.
2. Two tries? 31.6%
3. Three tries? 46.4%
4. 10 tries? 79.4%

(The equation: Your chance of success = 0.10^(1/X) —— where X is your # of tries, based on the assumption that there’s a 10% chance of succeeding)

It’s like this:

1. You can play a game of cards with odds stacked against you.
2. The more you try, the likelier you will succeed at least one time.

And, opposed to Vegas, succeeding in business just takes one win to establish your business for a profitable long-term.

You haven’t succeeded?

Don’t cry. Dry your eye. BAM.

Keep trying. You’ll get there.

Persist like a chicken wing.

• If you’re an office drone, work longer hours in the air conditioned space. What’s worse, heat stroke at home or going postal at work?
• Eat spicy Mexican food. Peppers have been shown to make people sweat more, helping to cool you off.
• Catch up on your reading at the local library. Libraries are usually cool and always free!
• Swim at Madison beach on Lake Washington with all the hipsters and college kids. Something to look at for everyone: cute blonde college girls and hulking tattooed freakshows.
• Visit a hotel pool for free. Google “Seattle Hotels” for a list of hotels to visit, then check their website to make sure they have a pool. Go to the hotel and walk in like you are already a guest and go straight to their pool. Trent and I did this at the Marriott in LA and it worked like a charm.

Like Cinderella, I have decided that going home at midnight is my best option.  Going out is a lot of fun and I meet many interesting people, but it seems that the only thing that happens after 12:30 is that I get more drunk or get myself into trouble.  Sometimes it can be fun to get drunk or go on a wild adventure, but on most weekend nights I am a happier person if I leave at 12:30.  I did it tonight and will have a more successful day tomorrow because of it.  Usually nothing happens that would have made it worth staying out that extra bit of time.  All you really do is hammer nails in the coffin.
