I have to disagree with you on alcoholism and addiction being a disease. The American Medical Association recognizes them as such. I don't believe anyone ever forces someone to take that first drink or drug...but I do believe that you don't know when you take that first drink or "hit" if you are one or not. Even if you are, you will probably be in "denial" for a long time about whether you are "one" or not.
Alcoholism and drug addiction always lead to one of three ends. Jails, institutions or death. Until I was 40 years old, I had never had a "stimulant" or "street drug." The instant I took that first hit, I was done for. I had never, ever experienced anything remotely close to that in my entire life. It took me down so quick. But still I chased that elusive "first time high." Lets not lie, if it wasn't good or even great for awhile, nobody would ever do it. But the price I paid...it was the "grim reaper" and the piper ALWAYS gets paid. So, if you have that choice, and you know its in your family "genes"-why risk it? It may not bring you down now, or even a year or four from now, but eventually, IT WILL. Nobody ever said when they were little: "Gee, I want to grow up to be an alcoholic or addict. I want to destroy everyone and everything around me." But it happens on a daily basis. I was told by an "expert" in the field of addiction, that it was very likely that 3 out of my 4 children were very likely-genetically predisposed-to be alcoholics, addicts or both.
I pray daily to God, not.
