The volumetrics diet is a “new” diet being put forth by a nutritionist named Barbara Rolls that says you can eat as much as you want, with the restriction that the food you eat should be low in “energy”. So is the new volumetrics diet a scam? Actually, no. The diet isn’t anything spectacular or new, it’s simply what nutritionists have been advocating for a very long time and Barbara Rolls has done an especially good job of advertising. The volumetrics diet focuses on helping people feel full, while not overloading on fat, protein and carbs. Volumetrics diet instead tells people to eat lots of low energy foods like vegetables, soup broth and nonfat milk. These foods help you feel full, while not consuming too many calories. Barbara Rolls book on volumetrics offers lots of recipes using food high in water, such as soups and stews and fruit-based desserts. Barbara Rolls volumetrics diet plan follows pretty standard advice that has been common knowledge to nutritionists for a long time- cut down on high calorie/fat foods like oil, butter ,eggs & cream and focus on the low-starch vegetables and soups. All of these diets are a little bit cheesy to me- the concept of just eating a certain type of food is not sustainable. People should focus on designing a good lifestyle for themselves that is healthy and will keep them happy for many years to come.
