Saudi Arabia… Place of Wonders

In Saudi Arabia, a 20-year old woman and her male companion were brutally raped by seven men. Islamic religious law demands that she be punished for having been with a man other than her husband. She was sentenced to 90 lashes. Her lawyer furiously appealed this ruling and the superior court in Saudi Arabia doubled her punishment, six months in jail and removed the lawyers license to practice. The court has also put gag orders on her, her husband and their attorney, while the state media service has openly attacked them.

Religion is once again causing harm. There was a huge reason that the founders of the United States chose to separate church from state; every country that has ever tried to incorporate religion into the state structure and laws has ended up massively abusing it’s people. The truth is that it is not just Islam, voodoo, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ that do these things; Protestants, Catholics, and evangelicals all do it too. In our country today, the harm religion does has been mostly limited to the people who believe in it. However, the Middle East still has many countries where people truly believe in their religions and are willing to kill to enforce their faith. These countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and Egypt, are violent hell holes where no one really wants to live. Freedom is extremely limited. I am extremely frightened of the religious right and their attempts to incoporate Christianity into American government. To do so would be a giant step backwards into the Middle Ages. Imagine how the Inquisition would be carried out with modern technology; the moral police would watch your texts, phone calls, emails, websites and bug your house. Violators would be sent to concentration camps where they would be tortured with all the hell modern medicine can bring to bear. You think I’m exaggerating, but look at what is going on in modern religious countries; rape victims being convicted of crimes they had no control over, the Supreme Court in Iran saying that murdering people for holding hands is okay and countless other atrocities. Or look anywhere in history- from the Bible’s own accounts of genocides and tortures and misogyny all the way up to the era of the Crusades and into the Middle Ages and the Inquisition or more recent history in America with witch trials. Religion + Government= Pure Evil.
